For the first time ever VanMoof is announcing the theft-rate of its bikes. In 2025 just 0,2% of all S5 and A5 bikes on the road in the Netherlands were declared stolen. Meanwhile, data from established Dutch industry bodies show an average e-bike theft-rate of over 2%: 10 times as much. VanMoof’s industry-leading anti-theft technology - which includes integrated locks, alarms, remote notifications and allows bikes to be marked stolen and made unusable with the tap of a button in the VanMoof app - has only improved with the release of VanMoof’s latest models: the S6 and the S6 open.
e-Bike theft is a worry for e-bike owners throughout Europe. Numbers from The Metropolitan Police Service showed there were 2,966 powered cycles and e-bikes stolen in London during 2025 – up 21% on the year before. Berlin saw 22 thousand bikes change owners involuntarily in 2025, with e-bikes reportedly pushing up the value of those thefts. Market research commissioned by VanMoof in Amsterdam, Berlin and London showed that 3 out of 10 potential e-bike buyers said fear of theft was a main reason they haven't purchased an e-bike yet.
With six lines of defense built-in, VanMoof turns security into something riders don’t have to think about. Only registered riders, and people they approve on their app, can unlock a bike. The moment a bike is moved, the alarm sounds and riders are alerted via push notifications. Advanced tracking allows VanMoof owners to always know where their bike is and with pinpoint accuracy, even in areas with low coverage. If stolen, VanMoof bikes can be disabled remotely. If a bike is still not recovered after a while, VanMoof’s Bike Hunters can track it down.
This leads to theft rates that are well below average. Publicly available ownership data from mobility branch organisations BOVAG and RAI Vereniging combined with theft numbers from VbV - an umbrella foundation for the insurance industry - show that e-bikes are very theft prone. VanMoof’s numbers are based on S5 and A5 data for the Netherlands. These models have comparable - albeit slightly less advanced - anti-theft technology to the current models: the S6 and the S6 Open.
‘VanMoof has been perfecting its anti-theft technology platform since the company started making connected bikes in 2016’, said Eliott Wertheimer, CEO of VanMoof. ‘This gave us a massive advantage in our industry, reinforced further by our years of bike hunting and the tools we created to support it. The S6 introduced the most advanced Anti-Theft System in the world, with the goal of cementing VanMoof bikes as thieves’ worst nightmare. Our numbers back it up, and we have worked extremely hard to ensure that anyone contemplating the purchase of a VanMoof bike never has to worry about theft.’
Most of VanMoof’s anti-theft stack is included with the bike and comes at no extra cost. Those that want extra peace of mind can purchase a Ride Pro subscription which includes, among other things, remote (alarm) notifications and precision bike tracking allowing riders to pinpoint their bike to a single room or an 11 meter radius. Riders in eligible markets can also take out a Theft Proof subscription: if a bike gets stolen VanMoof’s Bike Hunters will track it down. In case a bike is not recovered within 14 days VanMoof will replace it at no extra cost.
