Amsterdam, April 20, 2021 - Today, VanMoof announced its most anticipated innovation to date – a removable PowerBank that gives riders up to 100 kilometers (62 miles) extra range on their VanMoof S3 or X3. As a detachable accessory that can be easily charged indoors, the PowerBank is designed not only to extend your ride, but also to allow riders to charge their bikes more easily. The accessory makes VanMoof’s e-bikes even more accessible as even longer commute distances are now possible on a single charge. It also brings the VanMoof S3 & X3’s range capacity closer to that of an average electric car, making the e-bike company’s case for car replacement even more compelling. The PowerBank can charge the bike’s main battery both standing still or while riding, and packs a massive power upgrade – almost doubling the bike’s energy capacity.

Taking riders further than ever before

What riders wanted most was to be able to ride their bikes for longer and charge them more easily. The introduction of the PowerBank showcases VanMoof’s attentiveness to its growing community of riders. It’s also an example of how the e-bike company is constantly fine-tuning its product in-house to get the best results. Ultimately, the PowerBank complements VanMoof’s integration-first approach while offering riders the opportunity to go further and charge their bike more conveniently.

“This is one of our most significant innovations to date. It balances our core philosophies of integration and accessibility and ensures every one of our riders now gets the best of both worlds: a hassle free way to charge your VanMoof and supercharged cross-city cycling scope.”

Ties Carlier, co-founder of VanMoof.

VanMoof S3 & X3 refined to the last detail

Today’s announcement also includes a suite of rider-centric feedback improvements to the award-winning VanMoof S3 & X3. The incremental product refinements are central to VanMoof’s unique “the bike-is-never-finished” philosophy. In addition to the recent announcement that the VanMoof S3 & X3 e-bikes will work with Apple’s Find My app, VanMoof’s dedicated R&D base of product designers and engineers have also focused on honing the VanMoof S3 & X3 ride experience. Refined features on the latest e-bikes are: improved Matrix Display visibility, redesigned fender flaps and pedals, and improved internal wiring. VanMoof’s infamous bike boxes are now more compactly designed, with 70% less plastic. These small tweaks are all geared towards providing an even smoother and complete riding experience.

“Since launching the S3 & X3, we’ve listened closely. Rider feedback is central to our new tech. Our ability to build it in quickly is what makes VanMoof unique. We only launch when what’s in development is a step forward from what’s currently in production. That’s our iterative design cycle and that’s how we’ll reinvent the way people move around cities.”

Taco Carlier, Co-founder, VanMoof.

Reinventing the industry and changing cities

VanMoof’s vertically integrated supply chain and back to front ownership of everything from design to engineering, components to distribution, means it’s the only e-bike maker with the agility and ability to constantly update its product and respond in real-time to ongoing feedback from its riders. The new product launch comes at a moment when VanMoof is also spearheading its new service footprint with a massively expanded physical presence – from 8 to 50 cities over the next six months – and a revamped ecosystem built entirely around its riders.

Ride the future together

The PowerBank is bought as an optional accessory and can charge the bike’s main battery both standing still and while riding. It's priced at £315 (plus £22 for shipping if not ordered at the same time as a new bike), charges from 0–100% charge in three hours, and weighs 2.8 kg. It’ll give every VanMoof S3 & X3 rider an additional range of 45–100 km (28-62 miles), depending on what pedal assist level they ride with. The VanMoof PowerBank is available to order from April 20th at vanmoof.com. Ships June 2021.
