VanMoof Bike Hunt Report: June

When bike thieves struck close to home, the VanMoof Bike Hunters weren’t going to let them get away without a fight.

The Bike Hunters made a promise to recover every single stolen VanMoof bike. But when a bike gets stolen from a VanMoof team member the stakes are that much higher. With bikes taken from VanMoofers in Amsterdam, London, and San Francisco, the Hunters really had their work cut out for them this month.

First up, VanMoof PR Director Karlijn had a nasty surprise when she found her Electrified S2 stolen from inside her apartment hallway. Not the best start to a Monday. After getting over the shock, Karlijn roped in PR Coordinator Barry and Bike Hunt extraordinaire Eus – and got hunting.

It didn’t take long. The S2 was just a couple of blocks away, chained to an outdoor bike rack. And, despite a few superficial scuffs, it was in perfect condition. A quick snip with the bolt cutters, and Karlijn was reunited with her ride.

Over in London, journalist Steve Hogarty was taking a brand new Electrified S2 out to test. Already smitten, Steve turned his back on the bike for a few seconds… only for it to be stolen in broad daylight. Luckily, he had the Bike hunters on speed dial, and he could see the S2 had been moved to a nearby garden. With the approval of the local police, the Hunters sawed off the new lock, and Steve could continue his review. You can follow the whole saga over on Steve’s Twitter.

But while it was all smiles in Europe, San Francisco Brand Store Manager Folkert woke up to discover thieves had hit him where it hurts – kicking down the door to his beloved store. Hungry for revenge, the SF team set out to do what they do best (well... second best, after selling bikes). With strong tracking signals all round, the hunters quickly zeroed in on a bike that was already for sale, cut another free as they went, and cornered a thief with the help of the police. As of now, there are still two bike missing, but the SF team have a bit more of a spring in their step.

And back in Amsterdam, Eus was already tracking another missing bike, this time a Smart S. Our hotshot intern tracked the bike’s signal to a local park… and spotted the new owner relaxing on the grass. Eus politely explained that the bike was reported as stolen, and the suspect knew the game was up – “I only bought it for €10” he laughed, as he handed the bike back.

It just goes to show, crime doesn’t pay. Especially when you steal a VanMoof.

Does the thought of someone stealing your Smart or Electrified send you into a cold sweat? Peace of Mind Service to the rescue! It’s our ironclad guarantee that we’ll recover your bike in the event it gets stolen.

How does Peace of Mind theft protection work? Simple. When you report your bike stolen in the VanMoof app, we alert our ruthless Bike Hunter team to track it down. If we can’t recover it for you within two weeks, we'll replace it with a bike of the same (or better) age and condition.
