My 21 minute commute in Amsterdam

My 21 Minute Commute in Amsterdam

José Woldring is the founder and CEO of The Media Nanny, a PR agency representing artists, labels and festivals. We joined her on her 21 minute Electrified S2 commute – starting in Amsterdam’s Jordaan neighbourhood, and ending at her office at the Zuidas business district.

When your office moved to the other side of the city, you started commuting by car or scooter. What made you get back to biking?

I had my old VanMoof for six years, and it only took five minutes to ride to the office. But then we moved, and I had to choose between car, Uber or my scooter. By car, the traffic meant it would take almost 40 minutes. The scooter was only 20 minutes – but now you have to wear a helmet, and the emissions are really bad for the environment.

On the Electrified S2, I’m just as fast as a scooter. It’s so much greener, and you get to experience the city in a totally different way. It’s an amazing change for me.

I feel so much better when I arrive at work now – you’re just ‘fresher’ when you’re riding an electric bike. It’s way better than sitting inside a stuffy car or on your scooter.

“When you can ride much faster than a ‘normal’ bike, you really feel the freedom.”

And you save some time, compared to the car at least.

You know, when you can ride faster than any other bike in the lane, you really feel the freedom. Some people like to drive fast cars, and say it’s the best feeling in the world. For me, the S2 gives me the same thing – it’s the best part of my day!

How is this bike different to your previous model?

I love gadgets and this bike feels like it was made for me. The connected app makes things so simple. It automatically unlocks when you’re nearby, you can change your power level, check the battery, or ask the helpdesk a question. And I like that I can keep an eye on my electric bike, and check its location from afar.

Bike theft is a fact of life, especially if you live in a big city. But the app takes away the worry – it’s like having a baby monitor to keep an eye on your kids.
