Feature the Features: Kick Lock

There are bike locks. And then there’s Kick Lock.

Kick Lock is one of those features that defines a VanMoof. For the S6 generation, this rear-wheel ritual got the glow-up it deserved. Faster, sharper, and intuitive, almost like the bike already knows what you’re about to do.

It all comes down to a simple philosophy. Stop. Tap. Get on with your life. In cities where every second counts, this is what actually works.

Engagement is instant. The response is crisper. And thanks to upgraded water protection, it keeps doing its thing even when the weather doesn’t. If the S5 and A5 occasionally asked for a bit of alignment finesse, the S6 fixes that with a wider locking zone. Less thinking. Less worrying. More moving on with your day.

“We wanted locking your bike to feel as easy as locking your phone. One motion, zero friction.”

The original idea didn’t arrive in a flash of genius. It came from a very familiar VanMoof itch. Riders needed a faster way to lock up. Something as effortless as stepping out of a car and pressing a button.

So the team started experimenting. And like most good inventions, Kick Lock began life looking a little ridiculous.

Our first-ever prototype for the S2 was made entirely from 3D-printed plastic. It looked light enough to blow away in a strong breeze, but it worked. You tapped the rear wheel, and a tiny plastic mechanism snapped into place. It was never going to stop a thief, but it proved the idea.

“The first Kick Lock was all plastic and absolutely not thief-proof. But the moment it worked, we knew we were onto something.”

From there, things got serious. Proof-of-concept builds. CNC-machined prototypes. Multiple generations of production. Each version fixed a different frustration. The first design asked you to move the bike to unlock it. The next redesign for the VanMoof S5 & A5 solved that, but still left room for easier maintenance. And today, the version inside the S6, is where it all comes together.

Stronger. Faster. More reliable. The version the team is genuinely proud of.

“Version 3 is where it finally felt right. Strong, reliable, and quick in a way that feels almost mechanical and magical at the same time.”

Kick Lock isn’t just a feature. It’s kind of a VanMoof mindset. Reduce friction. Remove barriers. Make everyday riding feel smarter, smoother, and more joyful. And keep your bike exactly where it belongs.

It’s also just one of many upgrades quietly working inside the S6. If Kick Lock has you curious about what else is going on under the hood, there’s a very simple next step.
