Buying or selling a second-hand VanMoof

Buying or selling a second-hand VanMoof

One rider's next chapter is another rider's first ride. Buying or selling a second-hand VanMoof? Here's how to get from one rider to the next.

Every handover has a few moving parts. We've linked the details where they matter, so you can move through the process step by step.

Before you start: key terms to know

Whether you’re buying or selling, there are two important terms you’ll come across throughout the ownership transfer process. Your bike credentials are the details needed to register a bike in the VanMoof App. They consist of a Bike ID and validation code.

Bike ID

A unique identifier for your ride. You can usually find it:

  • On the back of the manual
  • On The sticker on the frame between the pedals
  • In the bike credentials email shared by the previous owner

Validation code

A code used to register the bike and transfer ownership to a new rider. A valid validation code is required to link a bike to a new account in the VanMoof App.

Buying a second-hand VanMoof

Every VanMoof needs a valid validation code to change hands. Without one, the bike can't be linked to a new account in the VanMoof App. It’s your bike’s digital key and is the most crucial part when buying a second-hand VanMoof. The rider manual code is single-use and after first registration, it becomes invalid and a new code is needed for ownership changes.

Step 1: Get the validation code

Before buying the bike, make sure the seller can provide a validation code.

If you can’t contact the seller, we can help you recover your bike credentials via our Recovery Service. If the ownership status isn't clear, it's worth pausing and checking your local police registry before purchasing.

Step 2: Register your bike

Use the validation code to link the bike to your account in the VanMoof App and complete the setup. Here’s a how-to breakdown.

Selling your VanMoof

Passing your VanMoof on to a new rider starts with a few simple steps. Completing them ensures the bike can be registered and ridden by its new owner.

Step 1: Prepare your bike

Before selling your bike:

  • Generate new bike credentials by removing it from your VanMoof account
  • Disconnect it from Apple Find My (if applicable)

These steps are required to transfer ownership. More info can be found here.

Step 2: Share the validation code

Once the bike has been removed from your account, a new validation code will be generated.

Share the code with the new rider so they can register the bike in the VanMoof App. A step-by-step guide can be found here.

Step 3: Complete the handoff

Provide the new rider with:

  • The bike credentials (PDF or printed)
  • Original proof of purchase (if available)
  • Charger and accessories

The new owner can then register the bike in the VanMoof App and complete the setup.
